Oil and gas

Reserve assessment, production sharing contracts, enhanced recovery and gas monetisation.

01 / The terrain

Numada works with its oil and gas clients across the entire value chain to capture the full value of their assets through better design, tough project management, and safer and more efficient operations. We create change that matters and is relevant to today’s world using novel growth strategies, safety, operational excellence, digital transformation and the best resource management techniques to guide companies towards lasting transformation, relevance, sustainability and profitability.

Numada’s oil & gas team members have outstanding experience and accomplishments. Successful leadership of safety culture change programs are put in place alongside stringent SH&E management practices focusing on zero harm and zero LTIs

Numada is committed to implementation of decarbonization programs at existing and new oil and gas fields, including programs targeting the elimination of gas flaring

Oil and gas field pathways

  1. Reserve assessment: what is in the ground and how much of it can be recovered
  2. Well history review: reopening the records of wells already drilled
  3. Production
  4. Processing
  5. Production sharing: cost recovery, then the split
  6. Enhanced recovery: injection back into the reservoir to lift the recovery factor
  7. Flare and stranded gas: gas taken to power instead of burned

The contract decides where most of the value is won or lost. On flared gas, the commercial answer and the decarbonisation answer are the same.

02 / What we bring

Bret Mattes is an earth scientist and economist trained in Australia, Canada and the United States. He was Exploration Manager at Shell International in The Hague, Vice President at BHP Billiton, a Director of North West Shelf Gas, Vice President at Australian LNG, and CEO of Star Energy for seven years.

Tom Shreve has structured and financed transactions in Indonesia since 1991, including capital markets issues, project financings, and the negotiation of the contracts underneath them.

Numada has a partnership with Benchmark Group from Singapore to develop oil in Riau, Sumatra.

03 / The work

Indonesian oil and gas runs on the production sharing contract, and that is where most of the value is won or lost. How much is in the ground, and how much of it can be recovered, is the part foreign operators arrive prepared for.

The harder questions are the other ones. How the cost recovery mechanism will treat the spend they are about to commit. What the regulator will accept in a plan of development, and what will come back for rework. And what sits in the parts of a field’s history that nobody has opened since they were filed. Some of the largest additions to recoverable reserves our people have been involved in came out of that last category, from reviewing well histories rather than from drilling.

For smaller oil companies contracting with Numada to provide management assistance on their own oil & gas concessions, Numada can increase the reserves base of their concessions and optimize production while assuming responsibility for safe and sustainable operations. We work in partnership with a successful European EOR (Enhanced Oil Recovery) company that will know how to increase recovery rates.

01

Production Sharing

In development towards production sharing in several exploration, oil production and EOR projects.

02

Enhanced recovery

For smaller operators we take management responsibility on their own concessions, working with a European enhanced oil recovery partner to lift recovery factors while carrying the safety and environmental obligations that come with operating a field.

03

Flare and stranded gas

Monetising gas that is currently burned or left in the ground. It is one of the few cases where the commercial answer and the decarbonisation answer are the same answer.
